Vera Vietor creates HAF on July 13, and upon her death in 1973 donates her home and $2.4 million to a trust in her name.
Office Opens
HAF opens its office on June 10 in the Vietors’ former home on Indianola Rd. in Bayside.
The foundation made its first grants this year, which totaled $122,000, to 16 nonprofit organizations.
10 Years of Grants
HAF passes $2 million in grants awarded in its first 10 years.
Wright Refuge
The estate of Carl and Ellen Wright deeds a small parcel of land that became the Wright Urban Wildlife Field Station. The site has been used for over 30 years by students studying wildlife at Cal Poly Humboldt.
Affiliates Established
A major growth year with the establishment of the Trinity Trust, Humboldt Health Foundation, and North Coast Cultural Trust.
NorCAN Launched
HAF launches the Northern California Association of Nonprofits (NorCAN) to serve the rural nonprofit sector in Humboldt, Del Norte, and Trinity counties.
Native Cultures Fund Founded
Creation of the Native Cultures Fund which has made over $2.9 million in grants in more than 100 California Native communities.
Cascadia Created
HAF launches the Cascadia Leadership Program to help participants build strong leadership skills.
Community Center Opened
HAF opens the Bayside Community Center to the public in June.
WRCF Established
Wild Rivers Community Foundation (WRCF) is established as an affiliate to serve Del Norte and Curry counties.
WRCF’s mission was to build both endowed and expendable funds for the exclusive benefit of those two counties. It has served as a “catcher’s mitt” for local projects to assist in building capacity in the community and to facilitate giving and resource distribution locally.
BHC Launched
WRCF chosen as the hub & backbone support for the Building Healthy Communities Initiative promoting better health outcomes for Del Norte and Tribal Lands.
True North Organizing Network Launched
HAF+WRCF incubates an initiative that would become the True North Organizing Network. Now a standalone organization, the network supports those who challenge social, economic, and environmental injustice.
Equity Alliance
Equity Alliance is started to support community conversations around race, equity and inclusion.
Scholarship Finder Launches
HAF launches its Scholarship Finder website, making it easy for students searching and applying for scholarships.
Responding to COVID-19
COVID-19 Regional Response Fund is created to support urgent community needs. Almost $3.4 million through over 260 grants were made out through this fund.
New Strategic Vision
Starting in 2021, “a thriving, just, healthy and equitable region” became the top priority of HAF+WRCF, which has launched a new strategic vision that is directing its efforts for the next 10 years and beyond.
The vision serves as a roadmap that guides how we invest
and collaborate across the four-county region, focusing on
four specific goals:
– Racial Equity
– Thriving Youth and Families
– Healthy Ecosystems and Environment
– A Just Economy and Economic Development
CORE Hub Incubated
The Redwood Region Climate & Community Resilience (CORE) Hub launches to ensure equity and inclusion are centered in the region’s climate adaption efforts.
