Below is a list of competitive grant rounds created to support our region (Humboldt, Del Norte, Trinity, and Curry counties). These grants are made possible by the generosity of donors, fund holders, affiliates, and funding partners. Other grant inquiries may be sent to grants@hafoundation.org to be routed to the appropriate contact and/or resources. Humboldt Area Foundation and Wild Rivers Community Foundation's strategic goals of racial equity, just economic development, healthy ecosystems and environments, and thriving youth and families drive our funding priorities and resource allocation. Our grants aim to minimize vulnerability and increase equity to strengthen institutions, providers, and leaders across our rural and native lands.

Angel Fund
Accepting Submissions starting 07/03/2023
The Angel Fund provides small grants to support the unmet health needs of Humboldt County residents. Requests must be made through a qualified sponsor (such as a recognized social service agency, school counselor, or medical provider); individuals in need of support may not apply for themselves. Grants are made on a one-time basis, per person, per 365-day period. Items that are of a recurrent nature are generally not funded.
Average Grant Size: Grants range from $50 - $250, (grants in excess of $500 are seldom approved). Decisions to grant funds are contingent upon funding criteria and the availability of funds at the time of review. Please click 'Preview' or visit the Angel Fund webpage for more information.

Upcoming Granting & Processing Pause
April 28th, 2025 – May 9th, 2025
Humboldt Area Foundation offices will be transitioning to a new grant processing system, and all staff will be in training during April 28th - May 9th.
For application consideration before the pause, applications must be submitted before noon (12:00 pm) on April 17th, 2025.
Applications submitted after noon (12:00 pm) on Thursday April 17th, 2025, will receive notification no sooner than May 15th, 2025.
All checks will be mailed, check pick-up will not be available April 28th, 2025 – May 9th, 2025.
Applications will remain open and will be accepted throughout the closure time period. Please submit requests by May 8th by noon, for review and processing the following Tuesday, with sponsor notification on May 15th.
Please note:
We would like to highlight that Humboldt Area Foundation + Wild Rivers Community Foundation, and its affiliate Humboldt Health Foundation, do not have case-management components. For support with navigating resources based on your needs, please utilize our community partners such as 2-1-1 Humboldt, Family Resource Centers, or your Primary Care Provider's office for assistance.
Requests must be submitted by a qualified sponsor. The Angel Fund Coordinator can assist sponsors with request inquiries, and status of applications will be shared when there are updates. Applicants must communicate with their sponsor directly about any inquiries or changes to their request.

Just Futures Grants '24-25
Accepting Submissions from 03/17/2025 to 05/05/2025
Just Futures grant round is designed to elevate Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) organizational leadership, support BIPOC communities, and support the organizations serving them in our region. Grants will be made to support organizations who have been impacted by historical underinvestment from philanthropy as a result of racialized marginalization. Grants will be made to charitable or public benefit organizations led by Black, Indigenous or People of Color and/or serving BIPOC communities that are doing work to improve the wellness, safety, and/or belonging of community members impacted by systemic racism/racialized marginalization.
Grants will be made for general operating support. Grants will be a minimum of $25,000. Requests for grants higher than this amount will be considered as funding allows and demonstration of all criteria being met.
Grants will not be made for specific programs, activities, capital campaigns, etc.
Funding Priorities and Eligibility:
- Organizations must serve BIPOC communities as a primary part of their work or programming, and those with racially diverse leadership that is reflective of the communities they serve will be prioritized.
- Applicants should be prepared to speak to how the needs and voices of people experiencing racialized marginalization are incorporated into their work and how the work of the organization improves the wellness, safety, and/or belonging of community members impacted by systemic racism/racialized marginalization.
- Applicants may be nonprofit organizations with 501c(3) status, organizations with a qualified fiscal sponsor, or public benefit groups
- Applicants must serve communities within the HAF+WRCF service area

Summer Youth Partnership 2025 (Humboldt, Del Norte, Curry)
No longer accepting submissions after 04/15/2025
The Summer Youth Partnership Program, made possible by the North Coast Grantmaking Partnership, provides grants to charitable organizations providing summer programs for vulnerable youth in our region. The organization must serve Humboldt, Del Norte, and/or Curry County. The summer program must be offered between June 1 and September 1 (please note: there is a separate application process for Trinity County).
Partners include the McLean Foundation, Providence, Community Health Investment and The Patricia D. & William B. Smullin Foundation.
Average Grant Range: $500 - $2,000; requests over this amount will be considered for programs that meet funding priorities
Arcata Foundation Fund - Spring 2025
No longer accepting submissions after 04/15/2025
The Arcata Foundation is dedicated to the enhancement of community life in the Arcata area. Arcata Foundation grants support community projects, with an emphasis on unique and specific projects, especially those that focus on youth and seniors. Grants average $500-1,000, with a maximum grant size of $2,500. Requests for funding of wages and salaries will not be considered.
Native Cultures Fund Grants
Accepting Submissions
The Native Cultures Fund (NCF) was created to support Native arts, cultural revitalization, and cultural transmission between generations. Grants can be made to individuals, non-profits, community partnerships, or Tribal Nations. They are made to projects that reflect the transmission of knowledge across generations, based in California Indian culture, art, values, and traditional practices.
Grant Size: $1,000 - $10,000

Pacific Redwoods Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples Crisis Action Fund
Accepting Submissions
The Pacific Redwoods Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples Crisis Action Fund supports work being done to address the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples crisis in Northern California. Specifically, by providing grants to Tribes and non-profit organizations, the grants will support strengthening organizing, advocacy, technical assistance and capacity building for programs working to advance efforts in California.
Average grant size: $5,000 -$7,000
Applications will be reviewed on a monthly basis.
Klamath River Fund: Catalyst Grants
Accepting Submissions starting 06/11/2024
The Klamath River Fund is a new program of Humboldt Area Foundation + Wild Rivers Community Foundation (HAF+WRCF), focused on community-led climate resilience and restorative justice work. Following the unprecedented dam removal in 2023 and 2024, the Klamath River Fund will invest in and amplify restoration and revitalization efforts in the entire Klamath River Basin in the decade that follows.
Catalyst Grants are meant to be responsive to community needs that would not otherwise be fulfilled by a traditional grant.
Requests should be under $10,000 and have a clear start and end date.
Examples of projects that will be funded include gap funding, funding for a specific event, or other projects that will be completed within 6-12 months.
Klamath River Fund: Community Impact Grant 2025
Accepting Submissions from 06/11/2024 to 08/11/2025
The Klamath River Fund is a new program of Humboldt Area Foundation + Wild Rivers Community Foundation (HAF+WRCF), focused on community-led climate resilience and restorative justice work. Following the unprecedented dam removal in 2023 and 2024, the Klamath River Fund will invest in and amplify restoration and revitalization efforts in the entire Klamath River Basin in the decade that follows.
Applications may be submitted year-round.
Requests will be reviewed twice a year.
The Hansen Family Trust, Chrisitan Endowment Fund '24-25
Accepting Submissions
Chris S. Hansen created this fund as a testamentary gift to memorialize his family. Grants support Christian organizations, both local and abroad, with an emphasis on local Lutheran activities.
This fund grants up to $5,000 per request.
This grant is on a quarterly cycle; submitted applications will be reviewed after deadlines on January 15, April 15, July 15, and October 15.
Ride to the Wild Fund '24-25
Accepting Submissions
The Ride to the Wild Fund, established by Bill and Melissa Zielinski, provides funds to cover the cost of a bus or other transportation so that teachers can take their students on educational field trips to local natural areas. Humboldt County K-12 teachers are encouraged to apply and to plan experiences that increase their students’ knowledge and awareness of nature.
Grants typically limited to the average cost for a bus and driver (for a single outing).
Youth Leadership Fund '24-25
Accepting Submissions
Grants from the Youth Leadership Fund support K-12 youth leadership development in our region (Humboldt, Del Norte, Trinity & Curry counties) with an emphasis in the areas of environment, sustainability and community responsibility. Organizations must demonstrate how their program, project, or efforts will affect the local environment, community at large and youth leadership development specifically. Maximum grant size of $1,500.
Humboldt Soccer Fund '24-25
Accepting Submissions
Humboldt Soccer Fund Soccer Development Grants are designed to support Humboldt County soccer professionals (coaches, trainers, referees, and researchers) development, field development and soccer participation scholarships.
Grants up to $10,000 per request.
Information - Del Norte Physician's Recruitment & Retention Fund
Accepting Submissions
Funds are available to organizations for recruitment costs and to individuals for medical loan repayment, profession development, or retention purposes. Recipients must commit to working in Del Norte County for the year the funding is received.
This fund will award up to $50,000 per recipient per year, for a maximum of two years.

Children's Dental Angel Fund (Treatment)
Accepting Submissions
The Children’s Dental Angel Fund supports dental-related needs of individual youth in Humboldt County in situations where emergency funds are required. Requests must be submitted through the child’s “dental home” / primary dental provider, or a regularly attended dental clinic. Service providers may not make requests for their own reimbursement and individuals may not apply on their own behalf.
Average Grant Size: Grants range from $800 - $3,000
Please note: this application is for dental treatment - if your client is in need of funding to travel to a dental appointment, please apply through the Angel Fund.
Application Processing Time:
- There is a two-week turnaround time required for application review and check processing.*
- The Dental Angel Fund committee makes determinations every Wednesday, with the exception of holidays.
- All applications must be complete and submitted each Monday by 8:30 am to be considered by the Dental Angel Fund committee on Wednesday.
*Occasionally the Dental Angel Fund committee will ask for additional information before making a decision. This will often result in a longer turn-around time.

Barry F. Phelps Leukemia Fund '24-25
Accepting Submissions
This grant supports individuals; applications must be completed by a qualified sponsor.
This fund was established by the family of Barry Phelps and is intended for young survivors of leukemia residing in the Eel River Valley, and greater Humboldt County.
Maximum of $2,000 per person per fiscal year.
B.U.D.S Fund '24-25
Accepting Submissions
The Building Up Down Syndrome Fund (BUDS) was established by Harold and Norma McClary to provide enrichment activities for Curry, Del Norte, Humboldt, and Trinity County residents with Down Syndrome. Eligible expenses may include but are not limited to: transportation/travel, technology purchases, event tickets, private lessons/classes, music & art supplies, etc.
The maximum grant amount is $300. Individuals are eligible once every five years. Applications must be submitted by a qualified sponsor, such as a school, nonprofit organization or social services agency. The sponsor will help administer the funds that are granted. Questions about the application process or release of funds should be directed to the grantmaking team at HAF+WRCF at 707-442-2993 or grants@hafoundation.org.
Phyllis Nilsen Leal Memorial Fund '24-25
Accepting Submissions
Applications must be made through a qualified sponsor, such as a recognized social service agency, school counselor or medical provider. This sponsor will help to administer the funds which are granted.
Louis Leal established this fund in honor of his wife, Phyllis Nilsen Leal. The Leal Fund was established to provide children suffering from cancer, or other sicknesses, something to lift their spirits during their treatment. This could be a piece of equipment, a tutor, books, toys, or other items and experiences that could lift the child’s spirits.
Recipients can receive a maximum of $2,000 per person per fiscal year.
Disaster Response & Resilience Fund '24-25
Accepting Submissions from 06/01/2024 to 06/30/2025
The Disaster Response & Resilience Fund supports organizations in Humboldt, Trinity, Del Norte, and Curry counties, as well as adjoining Tribal lands during current and future disasters, including fires, earthquakes, flooding, and other natural and man-made disasters.
During an active emergency, the fund prioritizes requests that are in response to the applicable disaster and requests that are addressing the immediate needs and safety of the most vulnerable.

Submit a general grant inquiry if you have reviewed the current grant opportunities offered by HAF+WRCF and do not see one that fits your organization’s needs. Submitting the inquiry will allow our team to learn about your project, assess what resources we may have available and direct you to the appropriate resource(s) at the foundation or otherwise.
