Below is a list of competitive grant rounds created to support our region (Humboldt, Del Norte, Trinity, and Curry counties). These grants are made possible by the generosity of donors, fund holders, affiliates, and funding partners. Other grant inquiries may be sent to grants@hafoundation.org to be routed to the appropriate contact and/or resources. Our grants aim to minimize vulnerability and increase equity to strengthen institutions, providers, and leaders across our rural and native lands.

Disaster Response & Resilience Fund Accepting Submissions

The Disaster Response & Resilience Fund supports charitable organizations in Humboldt, Trinity, Del Norte, and Curry counties, as well as adjoining Tribal lands during current and future disasters, including fires, earthquakes, flooding, and other natural and man-made disasters. This fund is unable to support requests for individuals and families. 


If you’re unable to fill out the form, please contact grants@hafoundation.org or call 707-442-2993 to be connected to a Program Officer. Otherwise, a Program Officer will contact you after you submit your form.

During an active emergency, the fund prioritizes requests that are in response to the applicable disaster and requests that are addressing the immediate needs and safety of the most vulnerable. 

Angel Fund '23-24 Accepting Submissions from 07/03/2023 to 06/30/2024

The Angel Fund provides small grants to support the unmet health needs of Humboldt County residents. Requests must be made through a qualified sponsor (such as a recognized social service agency, school counselor, or medical provider); individuals in need of support may not apply for themselves. Grants are made on a one-time basis, per person, per 365-day period. Items that are of a recurrent nature are generally not funded.

Average Grant Size: Grants range from $50 - $250(grants in excess of $500 are seldom approved). Decisions to grant funds are contingent upon funding criteria and the availability of funds at the time of review. Please click 'Preview' or visit the Angel Fund webpage for more information.

Helping Hand Fund '23-24 Accepting Submissions from 07/01/2023 to 06/30/2024

The Helping Hand Fund is a program of the Humboldt Area Foundation & Wild Rivers Community Foundation. It provides small grants to women, trans-men, and/or children* that are struggling for whom a small grant will provide some relief during a time of crisis. Clients must be Humboldt County residents.*Applications may be submitted on behalf of male guardians for resources for the youth in their care. 

Average Grant Size: Grants range from $30 - $150, with the maximum granted $150. Decisions to grant funds are contingent upon funding criteria and the availability of funds at the time of review.

Arcata Foundation Fund - Spring 2024 Accepting Submissions until 05/15/2024

The Arcata Foundation is dedicated to the enhancement of community life in the Arcata area. The foundation supports work in the areas of human services, education of all ages, art culture, local history, healthful recreation, peace, and enhancement of our local natural environment. Proposed projects or programs must demonstrate direct benefit to the citizens of Arcata.  Average grant amount: $1,500.00

Native Cultures Fund Grants Accepting Submissions

The Native Cultures Fund (NCF) was created to support Native arts, cultural revitalization, and cultural transmission between generations. Grants can be made to individuals, non-profits, community partnerships, or Tribal Nations. They are made to projects that reflect the transmission of knowledge across generations, based in California Indian culture, art, values, and traditional practices. 
Grant Size: $1,000 - $10,000
Deadline: April 1 & October 15

Pacific Redwoods Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples Crisis Action Fund Accepting Submissions

The Pacific Redwoods Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples Crisis Action Fund supports work being done to address the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples crisis in Northern California. Specifically, by providing grants to Tribes and non-profit organizations, the grants will support strengthening organizing, advocacy, technical assistance and capacity building for programs working to advance efforts in California.

Average grant size: $10,000 -$25,000

Applications will be reviewed on a monthly basis.

The Hansen Family Trust, Christian Endowment Fund '23-24 Accepting Submissions

Chris S. Hansen created this fund as a testamentary gift to memorialize his family. Grants support Christian organizations, both local and abroad, with an emphasis on local Lutheran activities. 

This fund grants up to $5,000 per request. 
This grant is on a quarterly cycle; submitted applications will be reviewed after deadlines on January 15, April 15, July 15, and October 15.

Ride to the Wild Fund '23-24 Accepting Submissions

The Ride to the Wild Fund, established by Bill and Melissa Zielinski, provides funds to cover the cost of a bus or other transportation so that teachers can take their students on educational field trips to local natural areas. Humboldt County K-12 teachers are encouraged to apply and to plan experiences that increase their students’ knowledge and awareness of nature.  

Grants typically limited to the average cost for a bus and driver (for a single outing).

Youth Leadership Fund '23-24 Accepting Submissions

Grants from the Youth Leadership Fund support K-12 youth leadership development in our region (Humboldt, Del Norte, Trinity & Curry counties) with an emphasis in the areas of environment, sustainability and community responsibility. Organizations must demonstrate how their program, project, or efforts will affect the local environment and community.  

Maximum grant size of $1,500.

Humboldt Soccer Fund '23-24 Accepting Submissions

Humboldt Soccer Fund Soccer Development Grants are designed to support Humboldt County soccer professionals (coaches, trainers, referees, and researchers) development, field development and soccer participation scholarships.  

Grants up to $10,000 per request.

Information - Del Norte Physician's Recruitment & Retention Fund Accepting Submissions

Funds are available to organizations for recruitment costs and to individuals for medical loan repayment, profession development, or retention purposes. Recipients must commit to working in Del Norte County for the year the funding is received. 

This fund will award up to $50,000 per recipient per year, for a maximum of two years.

Barry F. Phelps Leukemia Fund '23-24 Accepting Submissions

This grant supports individuals; applications must be completed by a qualified sponsor.

This fund was established by the family of Barry Phelps and is intended for young survivors of leukemia residing in the Eel River Valley, and greater Humboldt County. 

Maximum of $2,000 per person per fiscal year.

B.U.D.S Fund '23-24 Accepting Submissions

The Building Up Down Syndrome Fund (BUDS) was established by Harold and Norma McClary to provide enrichment activities for Curry, Del Norte, Humboldt, and Trinity County residents with Down Syndrome. Eligible expenses may include but are not limited to: transportation/travel, technology purchases, event tickets, private lessons/classes, music & art supplies, etc. 

The maximum grant amount is $300. Individuals are eligible once every five years. Applications must be submitted by a qualified sponsor, such as a school, nonprofit organization or social services agency. The sponsor will help administer the funds that are granted. Questions about the application process or release of funds should be directed to the grantmaking team at HAF+WRCF at 707-442-2993 or grants@hafoundation.org.

David "Davey" Somerville Fund for Children's Medical Expenses '23-24 Accepting Submissions

This grant supports individuals; applications must be completed by a qualified sponsor. 
David and Gabriel Somerville established the “Davey” Somerville Revolving Travel Fund to help families from Humboldt County to travel outside the area for children’s medical treatment. 

Average grant size of $200 per trip.

Phyllis Nilsen Leal Memorial Fund '23-24 Accepting Submissions

Applications must be made through a qualified sponsor, such as a recognized social service agency, school counselor or medical provider. This sponsor will help to administer the funds which are granted.

Louis Leal established this fund in honor of his wife, Phyllis Nilsen Leal. The Leal Fund was established to provide children suffering from cancer, or other sicknesses, something to lift their spirits during their treatment. This could be a piece of equipment, a tutor, books, toys, or other items and experiences that could lift the child’s spirits. 

Recipients can receive a maximum of $2,000 per person per fiscal year. 

Strategy Grants Accepting Submissions

Strategy Grants support charitable organizations and projects in Curry, Del Norte, Humboldt and/or Trinity that address a pressing community need for the most vulnerable and further the foundation's strategic goals for a thriving, just, healthy and equitable region. The grant request must thoroughly demonstrate efforts to decrease vulnerability and increase equity in our region. The organization and project must be connected to communities served and demonstrate a holistic understanding of the needs of the community.

Please submit an application to be considered. Following submittal, a Program Officer will be in contact. 
Strategy Grants are highly competitive. We recommend speaking with a Program Officer or Director of Grantmaking prior to submitting a proposal.

General Inquiry Accepting Submissions

Submit a general grant inquiry if you have reviewed the current grant opportunities offered by HAF+WRCF and do not see one that fits your organization’s needs. Submitting the inquiry will allow our team to learn about your project, assess what resources we may have available and direct you to the appropriate resource(s) at the foundation or otherwise.  A staff member will be in touch. Please note, due to a high volume of funding requests there may be a delay in contact time.
